There is no place in the world quite like Jamaica. Located south of Cuba and west of Hispaniola, Jamaica is the birthplace of reggae music and home to superstars such as Bob Marley and Usain Bolt, but Jamaica is known for more than the talent it produces. Before gaining its independence in 1962, Jamaica was governed by the United Kingdom and was a major export of products such as sugar cane, fruits like banana, coconut and grapefruit and of course, coffee. Today, Jamaica has a population of nearly 3 million people and a landmass of 10,991 km2 (or 4,244 sq miles). Holding the title of the third largest island in the Caribbean, Jamaica is however, arguably, the most famous. With picturesque mountains, a number of cascading waterfalls and rivers and white sand beaches, Jamaica is an island rich not only in its widely celebrated culture, but also its unmatched beauty.
If you’ve ever visited the island country, you will notice straight away some of the things that make Jamaica unique, much like its flag which is the only one in the world without the colours red, white or blue. With the motto of: “Out of Many, One People,” there is a sense of togetherness that can be felt through interactions with locals. Generally, a safe place to visit, Jamaicans welcome their visitors with open arms and warm smiles. Popular attractions include Dunn’s River Falls, a visit to the “haunted” Rose Hall Great House, touring the Bob Marley Museum and diving off the famous cliffs of Rick’s Café.
When coming up with ideas and concepts for cakes, we wanted to take advantage of the popular Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, grown locally in the Blue Mountains of Jamaica. Noted for its light flavour and lack of bitterness, Blue Mountain Coffee is one of the most desirable coffees in the world. The Blue Mountains are located between Kingston, the islands’ capital and Port Antonio. At its highest peak, the blue mountains measure 2,256 meters (or 7,402 feet), making them some of the highest mountains in the Caribbean. Despite the island heat, the mountain climate is cool and experiences heavy rainfall, making the soil more than an ideal setting for coffee harvesting.
Naturally we had to incorporate this universally sought-after coffee into our local cake. Our Jamaican rum cake is the Tortuga Blue Mountain Coffee Rum Cake, an ode to the local brew. Smell the aroma of the beans as you bite into our delicious rum cake, which pairs wonderfully with any of our coffees. Each rum cake is hand glazed with special 5-year-old, oak barrel aged Tortuga Gold Rum then vacuum sealed to lock in the delicious freshness. All cakes have a shelf life of 12 months.
Treat yourself to this specially made treat, available only online and of course, in Jamaica.
